Foxconn, the company that manufactures the iPhone and iPad, has admitted that underage interns had worked at one of their factories in China. The admission, which was first reported by USA Today, says that children as young as 14 were working on the assembly lines.
In a statement, Foxconn admits:
We recognize that full responsibility for these violations rests with our company and we have apologized to each of the students for our role in this action. Any Foxconn employee found, through our investigation, to be responsible for these violations will have their employment immediately terminated.
China’s minimum legal working age is 16.
This isn’t Foxconn’s first controversy. In fact, it isn’t the company’s first this month.
Earlier this month, 4,000 workers reportedly went on strike at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant over working conditions. This came just seven months after the company looked to improve employee relations.
