Future iPhones could feature fingerprint recognition software, perhaps even as a means of authenticating mobile payments. According to a recent report, Apple has signed a deal with the Australian firm Microlatch regarding this exciting technology, which is said to work in conjunction with near field communication (NFC).
Though Apple’s acquisition of AuthenTec is slowly moving along, it seems the Cupertino, Calif. company is nevertheless looking to move forward with the integration of fingerprint recognition technology in its popular smartphone. The news comes from David Murray, a lead investor in Microlatch, and hit the Web via The Australian:
Mr Murray said the company had an agreement with the notoriously secretive Apple to develop fingerprint technology for use in near-field communications applications.Microlatch has patented fingerprint identification technology that meets banking security standards without the need for central processing or storage; a process Mr Murray described as “self-registering”.
Details remain unknown, however, and the above deal doesn’t mean we’ll be looking for fingerprint-powered mobile payments in the seventh-gen iPhone. Instead, it shows how Apple is exploring numerous mobile payment avenues before deciding on implementing the technology in a future smartphone.
As always, we’ll keep you posted.
