Instagram Expands Web Presence With New Profile Pages

Instagram Expands Web Presence With New Profile Pages

Instagram has just announced, on its blog, that it will begin to roll out profile pages of its users.
As pictured, the Web profile will feature a selection of recently shared photos along with a profile photo and bio. You can also follow users, comment and like photos, and edit your profile directly from the site.
And it’ll be easy to surf to a profile page, according to Instagram:
To see your profile, or to explore a friend’s profile, simply navigate to instagram.com/[username]. For example, in order to view Nike’s profile, @nike, you’d navigate to instagram.com/nike on the web. If you don’t see your profile yet, be assured that you’ll see it in the next few days. We’re rolling out profiles to everyone on Instagram over the course of this week.
If you’re interested in reading more about how the profile pages will work as well as privacy settings, Instagram has a FAQ posted in its help center.
This expanded functionality has been hinted at for a while. Earlier this summer, a user stumbled on a “view profile” link that went to a 404 error page.
While this isn’t a full-fledged Web presence, I do wonder if this is the first concrete step along the way to Instagram’s assimilation into Facebook?
