The Foursquare universe has grown significantly. NASA’s Curiosity Rover is now checking-in using the social network. The result so far has been fun comments from millions of miles away.
First launched by NASA in December, the Curiosity Rover landed on Mars in September for a 23-month mission. Since then, it has been collecting and examining soil and other data, and then transmitting information back to Earth. Using Foursquare, Curiosity has announced its first check-in at Gale Crater and is also posting photos and tips while exploring the red planet.

According to David Weaver, associate administrator for communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington:
NASA is using Foursquare as a tool to share the rover’s new locations while exploring Mars. This will help to involve the public with the mission and give them a sense of the rover’s travels through Gale Crater.
Among the messages left by the Rover:
One check-in closer to being Mayor of Mars!Mars is cold, dry and rocky. Extra moisturizer and sturdy shoes would be a good idea, plus oxygen for those of you who breathe.Wish you weighed less? Visit the Red Planet. Because Mars is so much smaller, its gravity makes you weigh only 3/8 what you do on Earth.
All of this sounds exciting and a great way to learn about the NASA mission. Personally, I can’t wait to learn more about what Curiosity discovers. My only question for Curiosity, where’s the nearest McDonalds?
