Verizon Sold 650,000 iPhone 5 Units To End Quarter, 3.1 Million iPhones In Total

Verizon Wireless announced that they sold a total of 3.1 million iPhone units from July through September. Of those, 650,000 were Apple’s latest handset, the iPhone 5, which didn’t launch until Sept. 21.
During the completed quarter, the largest carrier in the U.S. sold a total of 6.8 million smartphones. Of these, 3.4 million were Android-based, while another 300,000 were from Microsoft and Research in Motion.
In total, Verizon’s quarterly earnings were up 14 percent from the year-ago quarter, and revenue grew 4 percent to $29 billion.
Last quarter, Verizon announced iPhone sales of 2.7 million units.
Verizon is the first of the U.S. carriers to announce iPhone sales. AT&T will announce their earnings on Oct. 24, while Sprint’s numbers will be announced a day later.
Apple’s earning call is on Oct. 25 beginning at 2 p.m. PDT. The company announced that 5 million iPhone 5 units were sold during its first weekend of release.
