The WatchESPN app has just gotten a lot more useful as an update today brings AirPlay support for all of the supported channels – ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, and ESPNU.
In previous versions of the app, viewers could only watch ESPN3 on their big screens with an Apple TV installed. And even then, the online-only channel couldn’t be placed into the background. But no longer.
All offered channels are now available on AirPlay, and users can even do other tasks on their iOS devices while the app is in the background.
Apple was reportedly trying to bring the WatchESPN app directly to the Apple TV earlier this year. But the AirPlay support is almost as good for sports fans.
WatchESPN is a universal app designed for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. It can be downloaded for free in the App Store. Even with the update, the app still isn’t designed for the iPhone 5’s larger 4-inch screen, which is puzzling.
And to take advantage of the content, you must be subscribed to ESPN through Bright House Networks, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, or Verizon FIOS. Verizon Internet users only have access to ESPN3.
Now let’s hope other apps will follow in ESPN’s lead in allowing AirPlay support. I’m looking at you HBO GO and Hulu+.
