Disney is to bestow the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs with a posthumous “Legend” award at its D23 Expo 2013, on Saturday, August 10, at the Anaheim Convention Center.................
The news was announced recently at the D23 Expo website, where a full list of award winners has been posted. Along with Jobs, “Monsters University” stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman, Dick Clark, and more will be presented with the prestigious awards, which are given annually to unique individuals who have helped create the iconic “Disney magic.”
Disney chief executive officer Bob Iger said of the 26-year tradition:
The Disney Legend Award is our highest and most coveted honor. It’s reserved for the extraordinary visionaries and artists behind the Disney magic, the men and women who push the limits of innovation and creativity to ensure Disney remains truly special. The eight Legends we honor this year helped create some of our most beloved characters along with exciting new worlds and thrilling attractions. They also entertained millions of people and expanded our definition of what’s possible. They are all indelible parts of our legacy, and we are proud to recognize them as true Disney Legends.
Steve Jobs, of course, not only co-founded Apple, but he was also an early investor and CEO of Pixar, and under his command the studio produced the first ever feature-length computer-animated film in 1995 (“Toy Story”). After Disney purchased Pixar in 2006, Jobs then became the company’s largest shareholder and joined Disney’s board of directors as a valuable member.
Given his success with Apple, it’s easy to forget that Jobs played an important role in the development of computer-animated cinema, and as such it’s great to see Disney awarding the iconic Apple genius with the posthumous honor. As mentioned, the award ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, August 10, 2013.
